Siopao Sauce

  • 2 cups water (or broth)
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 onion (minced)
  • 5 star anise
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
    1. Bring everything except the cornstarch to a boil in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
    2. Boil until reduced by a third. Strain out the sauce into a bowl to remove the onion and star anise. Return the liquid to the pan and bring back up to a boil.
    3. Mix the cornstarch with a few tablespoons of water and then whisk into the sauce until thickened.
    4. Cool and serve with siopao or Filipino pulled pork.
